Vote For The Oakland Sugar Soda Tax In November The need to tax sugary sodas as a way to raise money for local health programs is greater than ever. Estimates are that it will raise as much as $12 million annually for The City of Oakland. The Oakland City Council has placed the Sugar Soda Tax Initiative on the November ballot. It's authored by Oakland At-Large Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, District Four Councilmember Annie Campbell Washington, and District Six Councilmember Desley Brooks. The proposed tax would be one cent per ounce. Sodas are disproportionately marketed to blacks and Latinos in Oakland's flatlands - it's time to counter those actions and encourage a healthy diet.
